During the 1990s, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and some investment communities raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest between the consulting and auditing businesses of the “Big Five.” In May 2000, Ernst & Young became the first firm to formally separate its consulting business through a sale to Capgemini, refocusing its attention on operations in Europe and North America.

In South America, E&Y LLP transferred ownership of its consulting practices to local partners, leading to the creation of NetPartners as a spin-off from E&Y in the Andean Region in 2000.
